If you only have time for one archaeological day trip from Cancun, it usually comes down to two names: Chichen Itza and Tulum. They are both Maya sites, they are both easy to reach on an organised tour, and travellers agonise over which one deserves the day. The honest answer is that they are almost opposites, so the right pick depends on what you actually want from the day.

The quick verdict

Chichen Itza is the bigger, more historically important site and the one most people regret skipping. Tulum is smaller and quicker to walk, but it sits on a cliff above the Caribbean, which no photo of Chichen Itza can match.
